Poses for Mental Health and Anxiety Relief

1. Child's Pose (Balasana)

Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and fold forward with your arms extended or resting by your sides. Rest your forehead on the mat and hold for 1-3 minutes.

This gentle forward fold compresses the abdomen and slows the breath, activating the body's natural "rest and digest" response โ€” the opposite of the anxious "fight or flight" state.

2. Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)

Lie on your back and rest your legs vertically against a wall, hips close to the wall, arms relaxed at your sides.

This gentle inversion improves circulation and is widely used as a natural way to settle restlessness before sleep. Just 5-10 minutes here can feel more restorative than a nap.

3. Cat-Cow Stretch (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

On hands and knees, alternate between arching your back (cow) and rounding your spine (cat), moving with your breath โ€” inhale into cow, exhale into cat.

Syncing movement with breath is one of the simplest ways to interrupt anxious thought loops, while also releasing tension from the shoulders and lower back.

4. Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)

Sit with legs extended and fold forward from the hips, reaching toward your feet. A slight bend in the knees is fine if your hamstrings are tight.

Like Child's Pose, forward folds are naturally calming and are traditionally used for turning attention inward.
